"Down To Earth Day"

Did the Family Research Council just come out against Earth Day? Yes, yes, they did:
Today isn't just another reminder to use recycled paper or drive energy-efficient cars. It's a calculated attack on the sanctity of human life.

Okay....

  1. In fairness, the next sentence was exactly what I expected: "Population control is inextricably linked to the environmental and abortion movements."

While population control certainly necessitates some kind of birth control (birth being how we get more people), the folks at FRC sadly are opposed to anything that would keep sex from producing babies, including information about how sex produces babies. (And so one of my friends in college dated a 21-year-old Christian man from a rural, sex-ed free upbringing, who worried that he could have gotten her pregnant through oral sex.)

They also seem to think "the environment" = only what's good for humans. They claim to believe, "Stewardship of God's creation is the responsibility of every Christian." Yet in the next sentence: "But we must realize that there's a greater threat to the environment than climate change or scarce resources--and that's the threat of environmental extremism that elevates the planet above people."

The weird thing is that none of the mainstream celebration of Earth Day I've ever seen mentions anything about contraception, much less abortion. Indeed, mainstream environmentalism as shown in the general green trend isn't saying that we can maintain our current lifestyles if we just have a lot fewer people. On the contrary, it demands that we change our lifestyles to accommodate the number of us that there are. Mainstream environmentalism is very child-inclined -- that's why the symbol of environmental smug is the Prius, which is a safe, family-friendly sedan, rather than the less safe Scion or childless-sized Smart.

This is one of the many problems with the Family Research Council. Even when it seems like they have a legitimate beef to sell people (forced abortion and sterilization is bad), their need to sensationalize it and tie it to current events causes them to lose not only people like me but also folks who should have been in their corner already. I mean, Pat Robertson is making commercials about the need to work on climate change! WTF, FRC?!
