Internet Truisms
If I go to a cheap chain hotel (Holiday Inn or the like), internet is invariably free. If I go to a nice, upscale hotel, internet is invariably not free. Why is this so? It seems rather annoying to me. If there is a hotel that hits that magic sweet spot of "free internet" and "provides room service", I'll be hooked for life.

I think you answered your own question. If you're the type of person who can/will pay $17 to have a waiter walk an omelet up to your suite, you are also the type who can/will pony up for wireless.
And by type, I definitely mean elitist.
David,
High end hotels have always charged for "everything". Mid-range to low end hotels have discovered that free internet brings in customers.
