Then Again....

Maybe I shouldn't have underestimated the potency of the crazy-right wing in a classic red state.

Even if you take these folks on their own terms, they're pretty goddamn stupid.

The idea was proposed by Skull Valley Republican Rep. Judy Burges. She says if people have to prove their citizenship to apply for a job or get a passport, they should have to prove it to run for president.

But Obama has a passport! So he's already had to prove his citizenship!

PG: Sad to say, they don't even buy that one at the NC DMV. I mean it's true, but the twin forces of xenophobia and inane bureaucracy make 'proving citizenship' a pretty daunting endeavor. If I were a more pretentious person, I might even call it "Kafkaesque" :P

It's been so long since I first got a driver's license, I don't remember for certain what all I had to bring in, but I think it was my Social Security card and a certified photocopy of the record of my birth from the relevant department of health in my birth state. It was definitely records I already had, not something I had to go back to my place of birth to obtain (which original -- not photocopied and certified -- record seems to be what the birthers want).

I hope there's a Skull Valley Republican Party.

re: DMV requirements, not Obama ... I remember that the copy of my birth certificate that I brought in was deemed inadequate by the Pennsylvania DMV. It was the same one my mom had been guarding in the important documents file, had used to get my passport and had used to register me for school every time we moved (which was a lot). I can't remember what, exactly, the problem was, but it was lacking in some sort of officialness and I had to get a new one from North Carolina.

Which of course means I was actually born in Kenya.

How does one get a new birth certificate? It seems like it would get sort of circular in terms of proving one was indeed born at a particular place on a particular date.
