Power Resigns

Samantha Power has resigned from Obama's campaign after she called Hillary Clinton "a monster" in an interview with The Scotsman.

It's disappointing that she's leaving, but it was also the right thing to do. Hillary Clinton, though I do not support her over Obama, is no monster. These types of attacks cannot and should not be tolerated, and she had to go. MSNBC has her statement:
“With deep regret, I am resigning from my role as an advisor the Obama campaign effective today,” Power said in a statement released by the campaign. “Last Monday, I made inexcusable remarks that are at marked variance from my oft-stated admiration for Senator Clinton and from the spirit, tenor, and purpose of the Obama campaign. And I extend my deepest apologies to Senator Clinton, Senator Obama, and the remarkable team I have worked with over these long 14 months.”

Hopefully, after some time in the cold and some penance, she can make her way back.

I love how that paper ignored her note that the comment was off the record. Not that I'd have trusted them in her position, but still, classy of them.

No, they were right. "Off the record" is something that has to be agreed to in advance by both parties. The subject can't just unilaterally assert it -- particularly ex post facto.

Off the record has to be agreed to in advance, so the paper was under no obligation to actually keep the comment off the record, but it is important for those who report on the incident to state that Powers requested that the comment be off the record as soon as she said it. In other words, she clearly recognized that she had said something wrong and attempted to minimize the damage. It's distinct from the negative stuff that's come out of Clinton's campaign, where the speakers didn't even seem to realize they were making inappropriate statements until someone informed them of it and asked for their resignation or apology.
