I've got a friend who goes to USC (California, not Carolina), and just before they went on spring break, the police chased four guys who happened to be armed to the teeth onto campus. They ended up arresting three and shooting the last one. It made me feel much better about going to this small college in this little rural Georgia town. In the past three years, one murder on campus. One. And hardly any other violent crimes.
I'm not sure Carleton ever has had a murder on campus. The worst we generally see is petty theft.
Chicago also doesn't really have murders on campus either -- but a Ph.d student did get killed a little while back behind the law school (which is right on the edge of campus).
Actually, this drive-by did result in a guy being wounded in the leg. Indeed, most of the drive-bys reported this year (and there have been a few) usually have resulted in at least someone getting wounded.
No, we get plenty of "unlawful discharge of a weapon" reports too (those are the ones that have no injuries attached -- shots which do hit folks are "aggravated battery")
Sometimes lawyer, sometimes law professor, all the time awesome. Assistant Professor, Lewis & Clark Law School.

Population density means it's bound to happen in a closer vicinity.
Speaking of college campus shootings... eep.
