The Day in Review

I found out yesterday that I will spend next year locked in a box, never seeing my roommates or my girlfriend again. Yes, I made law review! Exciting news, for the next several days at least. Then I actually have to do it.

* * *

Colin Powell speaks on Sarah Palin, Henry Louis Gates, and racial profiling.

Jeffrey Goldberg and Michael Oren continue their dialogue on (among other things) the settlements.

The Al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigade is not thrilled at its portrayal in "Bruno".

This Ta-Nehisi Coates post on Vernon Forrest's death really struck a chord with me. I think we're all different people if we think our kids are threatened.

Venezuela is awfully thin-skinned for a country whose leader once called the US President "the devil".

Beatty Chadwick is free!

Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) is retiring -- bad news for Dems who saw him as a juicy target.

That's all I got for you. Quiet day today.

An interesting thing from the Venezuela article:

"the Colombian government that anti-tank weapons purchased by Venezuela from Sweden"

Since when has Sweden been an arms dealer?

Congratulations on law review! Just remember, when you want throw the bluebook at your article editor's head, to keep your eyes on the prizes: Ed Board and the boost to your resume for clerking and academia.

Dude, about that girlfriend...

I lost close to my best girlfriend ever (until I met my wife) in law school. It takes so much time and attention that you don't have much left over to give to the people you love. To be fair to her, you need to lay down what kind of a commitment you're signing up for, and why you're doing it. You ought to explain to her that this means she won't be seeing much of you and she'll have to take a lot on trust that you aren't giving up on the relationship because you're going to be apart more than she's used to. Yes it will end, but it's a tough road and it will seem very long while you're on it.

If she's willing to sign on to that, that's good. If she follows through on it, marry her.

Oh, and congratulations on making law review. It's a significant achievement and it will serve you well.

PG: We use the Maroon book here at Chicago. It's a far better manual: When I throw it at the editor's skull, the blood streaming down his forehead doesn't stain.

TL: Ah, but I have an ace up my sleeve: We were apart for all of last year. This year is going to be a net gain in time together no matter how much time I spent in the libe.

The girlfriend is doing a master's program next year anyway (at Chicago, thankfully). So we both got plenty on our plate, and both know that.

Mozil tov on making review! That's excellent, and I'm sure very well earned.

Congrats. Good news all around this week (the last revisions of my dissertation were approved today) Unfortunately for us readers, the combination of law review and in-town girlfriend will probably imply reduced posting on your part here. Let's hope not too much.
