A New Princess

Disney is finally giving us its first Black princess -- a big development in the history of the American entertainment culture.

Big development, yes.
But from the standpoint of giving girls of all colors role models who don't wear tiaras, not so much a positive one.

Maybe Disney can delegate that to Miramax.

Hmmm. A friend of mine and I are both mothers of 4-year-old girls who are very into the whole Disney princess thing. We were remarking that on all the Disney princess paraphanelia, the "princesses of color" (Mulan, Pocahontas, Jasmine) seem to get left out. Even Sleeping Beauty, the oldest (I think), least spunky and most passive of all the princesses--in other words, the one least likely for a young girl to want to emulate--always appears on the Disney stuff ranging from clothing to toys to makeup. But hey, she's white!

Let's hope that post-movie, Tiana gets treated a little better.
